Welcome to the SS Ventnor site

Offerings

In 1902 the SS Ventnor sank off New Zealand’s Hokianga coast.  With it went the remains of 500 Chinese goldminers: men who had come to New Zealand to seek their fortune but who died far from home and family.  Some of the bones were washed ashore and buried by local iwi.

Now, over 100 years later, the descendants of the early settler Chinese community will be returning to the Hokianga to pay their respects to the lost men and thank the iwi who have cared for their bones.
